1,000,000 steps ahead of parkinson's

Prestige Inhome Care are partnering  with Parkinson’s Queensland and Wellways Carer Gateway to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s Disease.

On Saturday 22nd April, a group of advocates including state Government, nurses, support group coordinators and care providers will lace up their boots for the inaugural 1,000,000 Steps Ahead Of Parkinson’s. 

The 2-day hike through the Sunshine Coast national park symbolises the arduous journey of someone newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. The final stop for hikers is at the epicentre of the Mapleton Country Market. The strategic positioning of the finish line within a community event also holds symbolic meaning; that creating a reliable support network can be powerfully beneficial to one’s mental health. Mapleton Country Market will be a community health event focused on providing Sunshine Coast locals with the resources to navigate aged care and disability support services, including special guests, craft, fashion and local produce stalls as well as a lunch prepared by the local Lions Club.

What Are We Hiking For?

The fundraising goal of $50,000 will be going directly too funding dedicated specialist nurses for Parkinson’s disease, contributing to early diagnosis support and the establishment of a new local Parkinson’s health clinic. 

With 32 people being diagnosed everyday with Parkinson’s, a cure and new treatment trials are becoming more and more essential with every passing day.

Leigh’s Story

Prestige Inhome Care client, Leigh is one of the estimated 130,000 Aussies living with Parkinson’s disease. 

When Leigh was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and realised she needed extra support two years ago, she considered going into a nursing home, however her dog, Lexi, pushed her to investigate in-home care. 

“If I was in a nursing home, I couldn’t take her with me, she’s my companion, my mate.” Leigh says. 

Leigh receives support which is tailored to her condition and allows her to stay living at home with Lexi. Leigh explains that her Prestige carers assist with tasks like cooking, cleaning and washing. “They are my second pair of hands.”

Driving Change Together

Prestige Inhome Care CEO and Founder, Nick McDonald, says “My team and I see it as a privilege to support so many people living with Parkinson’s disease around the country. Prestige Inhome Care have recently opened a new office in Buderim in 2022, providing tailored in-home support services to Sunshine Coast locals living with Parkinson’s.

State Member for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell will be joining the hiking group. “Like most Queenslanders I have a personal and close relationship with someone living with Parkinson’s. To say it has turned their world upside down is an understatement.” 

“I know that it is only through the amazing services of our nurse navigators and organisations like Prestige Inhome Care and Restoring Hope Parkinson’s Therapy that our loved ones gain hope and help and strength to continue the journey… and that’s why I’m taking part in 1,000,000 Steps Ahead Of Parkinson’s 2023!” said Powell.
